PRIVATE HEALTH EDUCATION PROVIDERS OF SOUTH AFRICA

PHEPSA represents the interests of private providers of nursing education and training in South Africa.

We are an association not for gain and incorporated as such in terms of section 21 of the South African Companies Act as PRIVATE HEALTH EDUCATION PROVIDERS OF SOUTH AFRICA (Registration No 2010/003003/08) (PHEPSA  being the acronym).

The contribution of private nursing education institutions to nursing education and training in South Africa is significant:  during 2009 81% of all qualifying nursing auxiliary learners, 68% of all qualifying enrolled nurses and approximately 45% of all students who successfully completed the bridging course for enrolled nurses leading to registration as a general/psychiatric nurse underwent their training at private nursing education institutions (source: the South African Nursing Council:  www.sanc.co.za).  In addition, our members do not receive any form of state subsidy (unlike universities and public nursing colleges) and their contribution to nursing education and training thus comes at no cost to the fiscus or taxpayer.

The constituent members of PHEPSA aim to protect and expand the contribution by private nursing education institutions to nursing education and training in South Africa especially in a time of change where the current nursing qualifications (“legacy qualifications”) will lapse on 30 June 2013 and be replaced by new qualifications.

Our members are all duly registered and accredited in accordance with prevailing South African legislation.
